Garita De San Ysidro-
This painting depicts a couple of ways people try to make some money at the San Ysidro border crossing. It is said to be the world’s busiest land border crossing. It was always interesting to me that so many young people were trying to make money for their families in Tijuana. Many times when you get to an intersection, a person will put some bubble gum or candy on your windshield, then right before the light turns green they’ll come by to see if you want to purchase their product. A couple of months ago we got to a red light and these kids started to do a whole wrestling routine. They had masks and everything. Then they had it timed so that right before the light turned green they would walk up to the cars and collect whatever donations people wanted to give them for the entertainment. There are the people that put alcohol in their mouths and spit fire into the air. There are young kids that juggle. All of this is good to me.
I think people who panhandle here in San Diego aren’t creative enough. Maybe they should try to entertain the crowds instead of just holding a cardboard sign up. Maybe I’m just being a jerk.
